After leaked photos and a flyer with some more info, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is now officially announced. Preorders are open and it should start shipping soon. And just like we assumed, it’s available for Sony E mount only (at least for now).

The lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Of course, you can also use it with APS-C models where it will provide a 42-300mm equivalent focal length range. It’s built from 18 elements in 14 groups, with a 7-blade diaphragm.

RXD in the lens’ name stands for Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive autofocus motor. Tamron promises quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance, so you can use the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 for both photos and video. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of 7.5″ and a 1:3.1 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects.

Note that the lens doesn’t have image stabilization, which might be a deal breaker for some of you. According to Tamron, their engineers focused on creating a compact and lightweight zoom lens instead.

The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is moisture-resistant, so you can use it in less than ideal weather conditions. The front element features a fluorine coating to protect it against dust, dirt, and smearing.
